Mozzarella Stick Onion Rings


  • 2 large onions
  • 4 mozzarella cheese sticks
  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 2 cups breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon papke
  • Oil for frying
  • Marinara sauce for dipping


  1. Peel the onions and cut into approximately 1/2-inch thick slices. Separate the rings.
  2. Slice the mozzarella sticks into 1-inch pieces.
  3. Place a piece of mozzarella between two onion rings that fit together (the mozzarella should be snug).
  4. Prepare three bowls for breading: one with flour, one with beaten eggs, and one with breadcrumbs mixed with garlic powder and paprika.
  5. Dip each onion-mozzarella ring into flour, then egg, and finally coat thoroughly with the breadcrumb mixture.
  6. Freeze the prepared rings for at least an hour (this helps them hold together while frying).
  7. Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C).
  8. Fry the rings in batches until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side. Do not overcrowd the fryer.
  9. Drain on paper towels.
  10. Serve hot with marinara sauce for dipping.
