Sweet and Salty Saltine Toffee

  1. Ingredients:
    • 1 sleeve (about 40) saltine crackers
    • 1 cup unsalted butter
    • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
    • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
    • 1 cup chopped pecans (optional)

    Directions:

    1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper and arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer, covering the entire sheet.
    2. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and brown sugar together. Bring to a boil and let it boil for 3-4 minutes, stirring constantly, until it thickens and turns a caramel color.
    3. Carefully pour the hot caramel mixture over the saltine crackers, spreading it evenly with a spatula.
    4. Bake in the preheated oven for 5 minutes, until the caramel is bubbly.
    5. Remove from the oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips over the hot caramel. Let them sit for a few minutes to melt, then spread the melted chocolate evenly over the toffee.
    6. If desired, sprinkle chopped pecans over the melted chocolate.
    7. Let the toffee cool completely, then break it into pieces.
