Plant-Based Worcestershire Sauce

  1. Ingredients:
    • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
    • 2 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari
    • 2 tablespoons water
    • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
    • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
    • 1 teaspoon mustard powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
    • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
    • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
    • 2 cloves, crushed
    • Optional: a few drops of liquid smoke for added depth

    Directions:

    1. Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan.
    2. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring frequently to dissolve the sugar.
    3. Reduce heat and simmer for about 5 minutes or until the sauce thickens slightly.
    4. Remove from heat and allow to cool.
    5. Strain the sauce through a fine-mesh sieve to remove any solids.
    6. Pour the strained sauce into a clean bottle or jar and refrigerate. The flavor will continue to develop over time.
