Patty Melts with Secret Sauce

Ingredients:

For the Patty Melts:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 tablespoons butter, divided
  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Secret Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon sweet pickle relish
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

  1. Make the Secret Sauce:
    • In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, Dijon mustard, sweet pickle relish, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well and set aside.
  2. Cook the Onions:
    • In a large skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are caramelized and golden brown, about 15-20 minutes. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Cook the Patties:
    • While the onions are cooking, shape the ground beef into 4 equal-sized patties. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
    • In the same skillet, cook the patties over medium-high heat until they are browned and cooked to your desired doneness, about 4-5 minutes per side. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  4. Assemble the Patty Melts:
    • Spread a thin layer of secret sauce on one side of each slice of rye bread.
    • Place a slice of Swiss cheese on top of the sauce on 4 slices of bread. Add a cooked patty on top of the cheese, followed by a portion of caramelized onions. Top with another slice of Swiss cheese and a second slice of bread, sauce side down.
    • Melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter in the skillet over medium heat. Place the assembled sandwiches in the skillet and cook until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted, about 3-4 minutes per side. You may need to do this in batches.
  5. Serve the patty melts hot with additional secret sauce on the side for dipping.
