Best Southern Pie Ever

Ingredients:

For the Crust:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 4-6 tablespoons ice water

For the Filling:

  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

For Garnish:

  • Powdered sugar (optional)
  • Fresh berries (optional)

Directions:

  1. Make the Crust:
    • In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Cut in the cold, cubed butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
    • Gradually add ice water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together. Form the dough into a disk, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll out the chilled dough on a lightly floured surface to fit a 9-inch pie dish. Transfer the dough to the pie dish, trim the edges, and crimp as desired.
  3. Make the Filling:
    • In a large bowl, whisk together sugar and flour. Add eggs and beat until well combined.
    • Stir in buttermilk, melted butter, vanilla extract, nutmeg, and salt until smooth.
  4. Pour the filling into the prepared pie crust.
  5. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the filling is set and the top is golden brown. A knife inserted into the center should come out clean.
  6. Let the pie cool completely on a wire rack before slicing.
  7. Garnish with a dusting of powdered sugar and fresh berries, if desired.
