Description

A classic Sloppy Joes recipe featuring ground beef, onions, bell peppers, and a tangy sauce served on hamburger buns.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef (or turkey)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • Optional toppings: sliced pickles, shredded cheese, or coleslaw

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef, breaking it up with a wooden spoon as it cooks for about 5-7 minutes until no longer pink. Drain excess fat.
  2. Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper to the skillet and sauté for 3-4 minutes until softened.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
  4. Pour in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, yellow mustard, chili powder, salt, and black pepper. Stir until well combined.
  5. Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add a splash of water if it gets too thick.
  6. Toast the hamburger buns if desired until golden brown.
  7. Spoon a generous amount of the Sloppy Joe mixture onto the bottom half of each bun and add optional toppings.
  8. Place the top half of the bun on and serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a healthier option, you can use ground turkey instead of beef.
  • Feel free to adjust the spices according to your taste.
  • These Sloppy Joes are best served fresh but can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
