Description

A delicious twist on the classic burger, featuring caramelized onions and melted Gruyère cheese, inspired by French onion soup.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend for juiciness)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 4 slices Gruyère cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns, toasted
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter and olive oil together.
  2. Add the sliced onions, sprinkle with sugar, and stir. Cook for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown.
  3. Add thyme and beef broth, cooking for another 5 minutes until the liquid reduces.
  4. In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard. Mix gently.
  5. Form the mixture into four equal patties with a small indentation in the center.
  6. Heat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat and cook the patties for 4-5 minutes on one side.
  7. Flip the patties, top each with a slice of Gruyère cheese, and cook for another 3-4 minutes until the cheese melts.
  8. Assemble the burgers on toasted buns, topping with caramelized onions and fresh parsley.
  9. Serve hot and enjoy!

Notes

  • For best results, use high-quality ground beef.
  • Adjust the cooking time for the burgers based on your preferred doneness.
  • Feel free to add additional toppings like arugula or sliced tomatoes.
