A classic meatloaf recipe that is the best you can come up with using ground beef and a tasty meatloaf sauce on top. An easy dinner idea to add to your weeknight menu rotation.

1 medium-sized onion (diced)

2 cloves garlic (minced)

1 tbsp butter

2 lbs ground beef

1 large Egg

1 c. panko bread crumbs

1 c. milk

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tsp thyme

1 tsp kosher salt

½ c. ketchup

1 tbsp brown sugar

1 tbsp spicy brown mustard

How to make Granny’s Classic Meatloaf

Step 1: Prepare the oven or grill. Preheat it to 350 degrees F.

Step 2: Using parchment paper, line a baking sheet for easy cleanup.

Step 3: In a saute pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once the butter has melted, add the onions to the pan and cook for about 3 to 5 minutes until aromatic and slightly brown, stirring occasionally.

Step 4: Adjust the heat to low, then add in the garlic. Resume cooking for another 2 to 3 minutes. Take out from the heat and cool.

Step 5: Combine the ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, milk, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and cooked onions and garlic in a large bowl. Mix well with your hands but do not overwork the meat.

Step 6: In the prepared baking sheet, shape the meat mixture into a loaf and slice a criss-cross pattern on top with a sharp knife.

Step 7: Place inside the preheated oven and bake for about 40 minutes, uncovered.

Step 8: In the meantime, mix the ketchup, mustard, and brown sugar in a bowl.

Step 9: After the cooking time hits the 40-minute mark, take the meatloaf out of the oven and spread the ketchup mixture on top.

Step 10: Place the meatloaf back in the oven. Resume baking for another 30 to 35 minutes until the internal temperature of the meatloaf reads 160 degrees F (70 degrees C).

Make sure not to overwork the meatloaf when mixing. Mix until just everything is incorporated.

Feel free to double the recipe for the ketchup topping!

Consider making the meatloaf flat if you prefer the outer layer crunchy. And this will also reduce the cooking time.

To check if the meatloaf is done, I suggest using a trusted meat thermometer.
